Buying traditional drinks abroad to bring back to the UK is a great way to keep savouring the tastes of your holiday destination on your return.

When you travel to cosmopolitan cities, you can usually find nearly any variety of food and beverage you fancy. But if you do want to familiarise yourself with a country’s local tastes, sampling its national drinks is easy and fun. You may even want to take some bottles home – which can make nice presents too!

Spirited Away

For a tastebud-tingling treat that never fails to make an impact, try tequila in Mexico. As the country’s national beverage, this spirit derived from the blue agave plant is the perfect order to enhance all that holiday Mexico has to offer. It is best enjoyed along Mexico’s stunning beach-fringed coast and in its sleepy fishing villages.

North of Mexico, the USA is a proud producer of whiskey – particularly Kentucky’s favourite, bourbon. Records show that it’s been made there since the 1700s. Bourbon is served across the country on the rocks, with mixers and in cocktails including the Manhattan. Try it on cheap holidays USA style, whether in the 24/7 clubs of Las Vegas or idyllic beach resorts along the Gulf of Mexico.

For a truly unique beverage, Greece’s ouzo is hard to beat. Made from herbal extracts including anise, it’s believed to have been first brewed in 1300 by monks. If you want to drink it like a local on a Greece holiday, then mix it with water and tuck into small plates of food called meze, as you watch the sun set over Greek hills.

Lager than Life

Beer fans tend to have favourite brews they stick to, but trips abroad can be the chance you need to try something new. If you’re going on Spain holidays then you’ll have a lot of regional beers to choose from, whether you’re partying in Benidorm or relaxing in Tenerife. Beers include well-known brands such as San Miguel as well as rare kinds that are specific to particular locations – and are sometimes even served with tonic water and lemon!
