After the spectacular London 2012 opening ceremony, Team GB has seen a major gold rush, with more than 40 medals already won, including a staggering 22 gold medals.
Following Bradley Wiggins’ weekend triumph in the Tour De France, Team GB ride into the Olympics on a real high – and a survey by businesses by Thomas Cook has revealed that cycling was the fourth most eagerly anticipated sport by visitors to the games. Bradley’s pedal power and the fact that Sir Chris Hoy has been given the honour of carrying the Olympic flag at the ceremony may have even boosted cycling’s popularity over third placed gymnastics. And our cyclists have not let us down with Hoy, Wiggins and Victoria Pendleton, among others, all sweeping to victory in the Velodrome.
Of the 2,000 people surveyed, 24 per cent expected to see an increase in tourism with people enjoying not only Olympic Games packages, exclusively provided by Thomas Cook, but also taking the change to enjoy London city breaks at the same time.
Businesses have also predicted that London 2012 will even overshadow the celebrations that made the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee such an amazing success. For those people who are not taking time off on holiday during the games, 23 per cent of those surveyed said they would be catching up with the medal challenge on their PCs at work.
And for those people who are looking to escape the excitement for some rest and relaxation on their holidays to Turkey or fancy catching up with the most popular event, athletics, in a beachside bar on a Spain holiday, Thomas Cook has a host of last-minute breaks to suit every budget.
