Spinalonga in Crete
Spinalonga is officially known as Kalydon and is a tiny island off the coast of Crete. It is just 0.085km2 to be precise. The island was originally part of Crete itself, however during the Venetian occupation the area was carved out to create a small island fortress to defend Crete. The island then followed a slightly sadder route when it became a leper colony, leading to today's nickname of the 'Island of Tears'.
Those days have long since gone and now visitors are free to explore the tiny island and what remains of the sleepy village. Follow the path that guides you through the secluded streets and on to the church and cemetery, where many of the island's inhabitants were laid to rest. A trip to Spinalonga is definitely worth doing, whether it be for historical purposes or for the fact it gives you the chance to capture the best panoramic view of Crete's White Mountains.
It's possible to book an excursion over to the island, departing from the picturesque town of Agios Nikolaos.
